Origins and Construction
Built in 1898, North Head Lighthouse was constructed to address the need for better navigation aids. Mariners approaching the Columbia River from the north often struggled to see the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse due to its location on the southern side of the river’s entrance.
The site was chosen for its elevated position atop a rugged bluff, providing clear visibility for ships traveling along the coast.
The lighthouse's 42-foot tower was made of brick and clad in concrete. It stands on a basalt foundation, blending durability with functionality.
Operation
Initially, the lighthouse was equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens, which was later replaced with smaller lenses for modernization.

I discovered my love for photography during a visit to my aunt during my sophomore year of high school. She gifted me a dozen rolls of film for an old, inexpensive Instamatic camera and took me on an unforgettable adventure to the San Diego Zoo. Armed with that little camera and a sense of wonder, I explored the zoo, capturing the beauty and personality of the animals through the lens.
